Publiken tas med till en rökig pianobar i amerikanska södern och till vaudeville-artisternas tältföreställningar. Vi möter 50‐talets rhythm & blues-artister, sedan Janis Joplin – som på 60-talet inspirerades av Bessie Smith – och Mavis Staples som fortfarande turnerar världen runt. Föreställningens röda tråd är en musikhistoria där pionjärer som Memphis Minnie, Big Mama Thornton, Ethel Waters, Etta James, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bessie Smith, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, Amy Winehouse med flera presenteras.
