Amun-Re

Black music is my first language – my mother-tongue – be it jazz, blues, gospel, rhythm & blues (r&b), calypso, samba, .... There's a reason it'scommonly referred to as “soul.” That's because the spirit - or the soul - of thepractitioner matters more, taking center stage. It is the maestro - one dimension above and beyond all the academics and practice. It's a masterteacher, which is why I am forever picking up new jewels from this internal 'master' – often surprising myself every time I “let the cat out of the bag.” As a listener, I am a connoisseur. Hence, I sing to entertain and amuse myself. It is my lifestyle on and off-stage. For a child growing up in the milieu of the South Bronx, this 'language' was unavoidable, blaring and constant - imbibed in gulps - from the first thing in the morning to the last thing at night. Such wasthe nature of my stomping grounds - colorful, rhythmic - a mecca of black music. Suffice it to say, the stuff runs through my veins.

For me, the stage is a room into which I enter, lock the door, then stand in front of the mirror to give the performance of my life solely for myself, only to subsequently discover the world was watching the whole time through the keyhole. I humbly accept this calling.
