Balthazars första film riskerar att gå om intet på grund av finansiärer som hellre stödjer uppbyggande och upplysande film än den sorts berättelser som intresserar Balthazar. Otålig vänder han sig till en lånehaj för att kunna börja filma. Parallellt med Balthazars berättelse växer därmed ytterligare två berättelser fram, som utmanar både gränsen mellan verklighet och fiktion och den mellan tid och rum. En handlar om ett syskonpar, som kämpar för att överleva materiellt och psykologiskt efter att ha förlorat sin familj i Rwandas folkmord. Den andra skildrar en man som isolerad från omvärlden matas med ord och preparat som växelvis lugnar honom och försätter honom i ett tillstånd av blint hat och aggressivitet.
