Det tyska rekviet är ett verk som växte fram under en period då Brahms förlorade såväl sin mor som sin nära vän Robert Schumann och den kärleksrelation som senare uppstod mellan honom och Clara Schumann. De valda bibliska texterna har en närhet till sorgen och Brahms beskrev gärna rekviet som ”ein menschliches Requiem” — en själamässa inte enbart avsedd för det tyska folket, utan för var och en som sörjer det hon förlorat.
