Den amerikansk-kanadensiska poeten, sångaren och multiinstrumentalisten Vera Sola är svår att sätta fingret på. Hon har omväxlande beskrivits som ”Leonard Cohens och Nancy Sinatras förlorade kärleksbarn”, ”Nick Cave i rollen som Staggerlee”, ”Patsy Cline i fronten för ett minimalistiskt Warpaint” och ”PJ Harvey när hon är som mest arg och med tänderna blottade”. Men inget av detta målar egentligen upp hela bilden. Med en skruvad, halsbrytande fingerpicking-stil, hemsökande vibrato och förmåga att förflytta rösten från ett gutturalt ylande till en viskande mjuk stamma, krossar hon genrer och tycks böja tiden.
Hennes album har mötts av många lovord, men Vera är fortfarande mest känd för sin hypnotiska scennärvaro. Enligt tidningen Loud and Quiet är hon som ”en Westworld-androide på villovägar; en levande anakronism, som både kan skämta på scenen och leva sig in i karaktärerna i sina låtar med full kraft och röra sig som om hon vore besatt av dem när hon uppträder”.
