USA, 1962. Fyrabarnsmamman och barnprogramledaren Sherri Chessen är gravid för femte gången. När det står klart att fostret sannolikt är svårt skadat och kanske inte kommer att överleva är läkarens råd tydligt: gör abort. Men efter åtalshot och en intensiv hatkampanj från abortmotståndare kan hon inte längre få hjälp i hemlandet. En möjlig lösning presenterar sig när en svensk kvällstidning plötsligt hör av sig. Kunde aborten genomföras på andra sidan Atlanten?
