Ett stort antal svenskar och kineser kom att bli involverade i ett för tiden helt unikt samarbete mellan Sverige och Kina. Genom utbytet blev Sverige under 1920- och 30-talen världsledande i studier av Kinas paleontologi och arkeologi. Varför blev det så? Varför samarbetade Kina med Sverige? Det började år 1914 då J.G. Andersson kom till Kina som rådgivare i gruvfrågor åt den kinesiska regeringen.
Jan Romgard, Fil dr i Asiens språk och kulturer, Stockholms universitet, föreläser om bakgrunden till Östasiatiska museets tillkomst och dess betydelse för den speciella relation som uppstod mellan Kina och Sverige i början på 1900-talet.
