Shonen Knife – från Osaka, Japan – bildades 1981 av systrarna Naoko och Atsuko, långt innan uttryck som "riot girrrl" och "girl rock" blev etablerade begrepp. Denna helkvinnliga trio började glatt knäcka gitarrsträngar till tonerna av importerade Ramones-covers.
Precis som den kultförklarade japanska tjejgruppen The 5,6,7,8s har Shonen Knife stått emot årtionden av musikaliska förändringar genom att hålla sig till det de gör bäst: att leverera sin smittande version av feelgood pop-punk.
Under de senaste 40 åren kanske de inte har fyllt stadioner, men de har blivit erkända som en stor influens på alternativrockband som Sonic Youth och Nirvana.
Trots många år på vägarna är deras entusiasm för liveframträdanden fortfarande en ren glädje att bevittna. De dyker ner i en omfattande låtskatt som spänner från rå thrashrock till hits med paradkaraktär.
Men nyckeln till deras framgång har varit deras avväpnande och ofta lätt surrealistiska tolkning av punk- och rockinfluenser – och med låttitlar som Tortoise Brand Pot Cleaner, kan man verkligen beskylla dem för att ta sig själva på alltför stort allvar?
