    REBELS WITH A CAUSE

Strong characters with bold and unflinchingly brazen attitudes take centre stage in this programme. Featuring Mika Gustafson’s Mephobia which blurs the lines between fiction and non-fiction with her hard-hitting short following a group of young women causing havoc in a Swedish neighbourhood, Brúsi Ólason’s Viktoría dramatises a farmer’s battle to keep her dairy farm afloat after her only colleague leaves her stranded, and the brilliant experimental dance film Juck, pushes boundaries in female representation. Filmmaking that packs a punch, unapologetically so.

JUCK by Olivia Kastebring, Julia Gumpert & Ulrika Bandeira
A video made by the Swedish all-female dance group, JUCK, went viral globally in 2013. ‘Juck’ is Swedish for ‘hump’ and their performances push the limits for how we are used to seeing the female body. JUCK provokes, inspires and breaks norms. And how do you define femininity?

    Water Bears by Yenni Lee
A discussion in a 6th grade class about bullying and power structures evolves into a power struggle within the group of 11-year-olds, with the bystanders as passive-aggressive participants. The film looks at the bystander effect in different dimensions.

    Viktoría by Brúsi Ólason
Viktoría, a strong-willed woman in her 60s, is left to manage her dairy farm on her own when her only employee leaves for a better job. The farm has been in Viktoría’s family for generations.

    The Elephant by Kerren Lumer-Klabbers
Magnus is celebrating his birthday. Like so often, he entertains his guests with far-fetched stories. Everybody knows he’s lying but no one says anything. Magnus had planned to give his girlfriend Cille a key to his apartment. But as the party progresses, his stories get crazier and one lie leads to another. Eventually Cille abandons the party, hurt and angry.

    Mephobia by Mika Gustafson
A group of girls aged 6–8 wander around the neighbourhood making trouble. A group of older girls is just as frustrated, but their restlessness expresses itself differently. One of the scenes is uploaded onto YouTube and illustrates how the camera can be used as a weapon. What do we experience as true or authentic and what are consequences of how we read images? The film mixes documentary and fiction.

This programme will also be screened on September 24th at 14:30. To get a ticket for this screening, click on this link.
