Sedan Mercury Rev bildades 1989 har de gjort karriär genom att djärvt utforska gränserna för den konstnärliga uppfattningen och kanalisera färger, ljud och visioner som alltid verkar ligga precis utanför vår dödliga räckvidd. The Guardian hyllade gruppen som "en raritet inom indierocken: ett band som ständigt har utvecklat sitt sound, tänjt på gränserna för vad rockmusik faktiskt innebär under 25 år och lånat från jazz, funk, doo-wop, techno, folk och mycket mer längs vägen", medan Rolling Stone berömde deras "majestätiska kaos" och BBC hyllade deras "skimrande psykedeliska pop, uppslukande indierock, [och] spektakulärt fängslande passager av överdådig instrumentering". Bandets debut 1991, "Yerself Is Steam", hamnade på Pitchforks lista över de bästa Shoegaze-albumen genom tiderna och genombrottet 1998, "Deserter's Songs", utsågs till årets album av NME när det släpptes.
