Hela Mattias Alkbergs konstnärliga värv kan beskrivas som en balansakt vid ruinens brant, på både ett personligt och samhälleligt plan. Sedan debuten med bandet The Bear Quartet redan 1992 har han konsekvent valt omvägen framför genvägen. Valet mellan konstnärlig utveckling och karrriärsmässig trygghet har aldrig ens varit ett val.
En integritet som förtjänat honom stor respekt (i vissa kretsar kanske snarare att beskriva som oreserverad kärlek) men som också kostat. Som alla modig val gör.
När Mattias Alkberg nu släpper sitt 31 (!) är det bland alla tvära kast i hans musikaliska bana det mest radikala.
Han har nämligen valt att göra en skiva inspirerad av modern elektronisk billboardpop med inslag av autotune och rap.
Att albumet är inspirerad av hitlistornas toppskikt är inte bara en teoretisk konstruktion. Också i praktiskt genomförande har det inte sparats på krutet för att nå fram till den önskande ljudvärlden. Albumet är mixad av Isabel Gracefield (Dua Lipa) i London och mastrad av Dale Becker (Young Thug, Doja Cat, SZA) i Los Angeles. Resultatet skiner som ett rymdskepp från framtiden.
Albumet som fått namnet DRAKE är modern pop med själasökande och dråpliga texter. Om att vilja hitta nåt, men vad?
