Maciej Zaremba växte upp i efterkrigspolen. 1969 lämnar hans judiska mor Polen tillsammans med barnen därtill tvingad av den politiskt drivna antisemitiska vågen i landet. De landar i Stockholm.
I sin självbiografi Huset med de två tornen betraktar han först sin barndom i det kommunistgråa Polen. Den tycks oskuldsfull men laddad, givet vad som hänt och händer. Men han drivs till en mycket längre och smärtsammare resa, rakt in i den stora europeiska katastrofen, mellankrigstidens polska antisemitism och 40-talets massmord. Hur han föräldrar kunde överleva är den gåta han försöker få svar på.
