Sara Lidman skriver om längtan efter barn och man. Som en röd tråd i hennes dagböcker och brev finns tvivel på att kunna bli älskad för den hon är. Hon förälskar sig ofta och särskilt i sitt livs kärlek – i Sydafrika. Han är svart och hon får betala ett högt pris för sin kärlek under apartheidregimens raslagar, som sluter sig kring henne tills hon till sist tvingas lämna Sydafrika.
En känslomässigt stark film om en kvinna som vill ha barn och – om att skriva, skriva. Filmen bygger på Sara Lidmans brev och dagböcker.
