Världens största imperium står på sin höjd och drottning Victorias area ligger på ödmjuka 24% av jordens landyta. Mitt i detta väldiga rike finner vi några av 1800-talets celebriteter som verkar i huvudstaden London. Den världsvane Dr David Livingstone har just öppnat upp dörrarna till sin årliga auktion med artefakter från världens alla hörn när en genuint otrevlig svensk vetenskapsman gör entré. Denne är i jakt på en oerhört sällsynt och hypermodern explosiv substans men han verkar dock inte vara den enda som är intresserad… Auktionens köpmän bjuder upp till dans men vinnaren får betala ett mycket högt pris när denne får sätta livet till och blir MÖRDAD!
För att finna den skyldige tas fallet upp av stans främsta kommissarie, den berömde Ace från Londonpolisen Scotland Yard. Till sin hjälp har Ace den till synes mindre begåvade och smånördiga kollegan polisaspirant Rubik, 14½ år gammal, som drömmer om att en dag lösa sin första mordgåta.
Lagens långa arm letar sig fram genom London och med hjälp av märkliga ledtrådar, naturvetenskapliga metoder och halvnyktra irländare gör de två poliserna vad de kan för att finna vem som är skyldig innan mördaren slår till IGEN.
