Iran har drabbats av ekonomiska sanktioner, men har en ung, välutbildad befolkning, som kräver reformer och modernisering av landet. Politiskt pågår en dragkamp mellan mer moderata och mer konservativa krafter. USA har under president Trump skapat stora politiska spänningar genom att säga upp det kärnenergiavtal som slöts med Iran under föregångaren, president Obamas tid vid makten.
Iran är en aktiv aktör som ledare för den shiamuslimska gruppen i konflikterna i Mellersta Östern med anförararen av den sunnimuslimska gruppen, Saudiarabien, som motpol. Iran stöder sina trosfränder i Irak, Syrien och Libanon.
