Mexiko har blivit USAs viktigste handelspartner och upptagit en nyckelroll i den s k nearsharing ekonomisk strategi, som USAs regering driver för att konfrontera Kinas ökade inflytande i den globala handeln. Samtidigt ökar spänningarna mellan länderna på grund av massimmigrationen till USA och ett allt större inflytande av knarkkarteller, vars transnationella kopplingar gör detta till ett regionalt problem med komplexa dimensioner. Gamla stereotyper utmanas, Mexiko har redan en kvinnlig statschef och går mot liberalisering av abort, medan delstater i USA har gått åt andra hållet.
Hur utmaningarna ska angripas beror i hög grad på valet av president i USA som genomförts två dagar innan seminariet.
Seminariet kommer att ta upp politiska och ekonomiska situationen i Mexiko. Dessutom frågan hur viktigt Mexiko är för USAs fortsatta roll som stormakt, och vad landets nya positionering innebär för EU-länderna och det globala geopolitiska spelet.
