Den 7.e oktober är det ett år sedan Hamas attack mot Israel som blev den utlösande faktorn till ett nytt krig i Gaza – som utöver de 1200 israeler som dödades den dagen har släckt livet på 40 000 människor och i stort jämnat området med marken. Den humanitära situationen är katastrofal och dödandet har fortsatt, trots kraven från stora delar av det internationella samfundet på att Israel måste upphöra med våldsamheterna och på Hamas att släppa gisslan.
Parallellt med detta har det israeliska förtrycket av palestinier på Västbanken fortsatt och fördjupats. Det har också funnits en ständig oro över att kriget ska eskalera mot fler fronter, i första hand mellan Israel och Iran i samverkan med Hizbollah i Libanon till följd av det israeliska mordet på Hamas politiska ledare och andra ledande personer med anknytning till Hamas eller Hizbollah.
Vad är det som gör att hatet och oförsonligheten gått så djupt att det senaste årets händelser ens kunnat hända? Vad måste göras för att stabilisera situationen så att steg kan tas mot en rättvis och varaktig fred? Och hur ser en långsiktig lösning på konflikten ut?
