Helle Rydströms forskning har framför allt behandlat socialiseringen av flickor, innebörden av maskulinitet och sexualitet i länder som Vietnam och Indien. Hon har också forskat om kolonialism, krig och övergrepp liksom vietnamesiska krigsminnen från kriget mot USA.
Rydström utreder hur kvinnors ’familjelycka’ i Vietnam paradoxalt och alarmerande, anses innefatta ett ’visst mått’ av våld från deras partners. Hon belyser hur talet om ’den lyckliga familjen’ görs till en undantagszon, där lagar som förbjuder våld upphör att gälla; där kvinnors juridiska och politiska rättigheter görs otydliga. Hon undersöker också hur Kvinnorförbundets mångtydiga strategier t o m kan komma att förstärka könsbaserat våld under rubriken ’familjelycka’.
