En av de mest positiva händelserna på afrikanska kontinenten i somras var en fredsöverenskommelse slöts mellan Eritrea och Etiopien efter en längre tids konflikttillstånd mellan länderna. Ett regimskifte i Etiopien som gett förhoppningar om en mer demokratisk utveckling i det landet anses ha möjliggjort denna fredliga vändning. I Eritrea råder diktatur och bristande mänskliga rättigheter, och inget demokratiskt val har hållits sedan landet 1992 blev självständigt från Etiopien. Ett känt fall är svenske medborgaren Dawit Isaak som hållits fängslad många år utan rättegång.
