Vera och Ellen möts på charkuterifabriken på Söder i Stockholm, gifter sig med varsin bror, får barn, skiljer sig och bildar liksom en ny familj tillsammans, Vera med dottern Sasja, Ellen med sönerna Sigvard och Folke. Banden dem emellan är starka men komplicerade, det är vänskap och kärlek men också strid och hat. Genom den här familjen skildras också det dramatiska 1900-talet fram till idag. I centrum för romanen och dess huvudpersoner står frågan: Vad gör vi med våra liv?
