Med sina repetitiva rytmer och slingriga gitarrer är tuaregrocken, eller ”ökenbluesen”, ett älskat fenomen långt bortom den afrikanska kontinenten. Men jämfört med superstjärnor som Tinariwen och Ali Farka Touré framstår Etran de L’Aïr som den bångstyriga partykusinen. Detta familjekollektiv kallar sig ett ”bröllopsband för folk utan pengar”. I deras tolkning av genren ingår två, eller ibland tre, gitarrister som verkar vilja spela flyhänta solon samtidigt, trummor som slamrar likt en vansinnesmaskin, medan sången hotar att spräcka högtalarmembranet.
Den röjiga stämningen fångas på senaste albumet, Agadez, inspelat live och uppkallat efter gruppens hemstad. Där, i hjärtat av Nigers Aïr-region, bildades Etran de L’Aïr 1995. Utrustade med endast en akustisk gitarr och en kalebass på vilken de trummade med en sandal spelade de på bröllop och andra högtider. Snart skaffade de elgitarrer och trummor, och vid det här laget finns det knappt ett kvarter i staden som inte satts i gungning av Etran de L’Aïrs ökenpunk.
