På sjuttiotalet spelade Hailu Mergia med Walias Band, tillsammans med bland andra ethio-jazzens fader Mulatu Astatke. Snart hårdnade det politiska klimatet i Etiopien, så när Walias Band turnerade i USA bestämde sig delar av gruppen att stanna kvar och söka sin lycka som musiker i Washington DC. Hailu Mergia började köra taxi samtidigt som han fortsatte skriva och spela musik i ensamhet. Amhara, Tigrinya och Oromo-melodier svävade lätt över hans futuristiska rytmlandskap. En trummaskin, ett elpiano och en Yamaha DX7 var hans verktyg, tillsammans med dragspelet – ett instrument som utgjorde en sorts emotionell direktförbindelse med den gamla etiopiska musiken för honom.
”Hailu Mergia and his Classical Instrument” blev namnet på en av många kassetter som spelades in hemma i källaren. En samling instrumentala låtar som är en musikalisk lägesrapport från andra sidan Atlanten, men det kunde lika gärna vara från en ödslig stjärna långt bort i yttre rymden. Hailu Mergias musik spreds bland de etiopiska minoriteterna i USA medan han fortsatte köra taxi. Först 2013 nådde ”Hailu Mergia and his Classical Instrument” en bredare publik i samband med att bolaget Awesome Tapes From Africa återutgav albumet. Han började åter turnera och spelade på Clandestino Festival både i Göteborg och Bottna (2013-2014). I februari släpps albumet Lala Belu – det första nya albumet från Hailu Mergia på över femton år! Vid den här spelningen på Club Clandestino är han i stellärt sällskap av den etiopiska bassisten Alemseged Kebede och den trinidadianske trummisen Kenneth ”Ken” Joseph från den legendariska reggaegruppen Culture.
