Den taiwanesisk-kanadensiske musikern och skådespelaren Alex Zhang Hungtai är något av en musikalisk kameleont: Under namnet Dirty Beaches kombinerade han dissonanta indie-love songs med pomadaglänsande rock ’n’ roll-estetik. Just när hypemaskinen satte igång på allvar kastade han av sig det skinnet och förvandlades till en sorts jazzmusiker under namnet Last Lizard. Och därefter syntes han med dronetrion Love Theme – och i ett fiktivt husband i den andra inkarnationen av David Lynchs tv-serie Twin Peaks. Någonstans längs vägen började han spela saxofon, övade under fyra år och skrev musik på det nya instrumentet som han kallar ”misslyckad”, i den bemärkelsen att den inte lever upp till andras och egna förväntningar. Gradvis växte en ny idé fram: Att göra sig fri från begränsningarna som finns i allas våra egna narrativ om vem vi är och vad vi gör – och i hans fall vilken sorts musiker han var. Genom att sampla, EQ:a och sträcka ut ljudvågorna från saxofonen skapade Alex Zhang Hungtai en labyrint av mysteriösa men inbjudande ljud som bildade albumet Divine Weight. Låtarna kan beskrivas som hörbara skulpturer som han mejslar fram ur några få block av ljud: Stora svall av körer, blåsinstrument och kyrkorglar.
