En raspig sampling från sekelskiftet, alltså det förra, körd genom moderna effekter inleder Nadah El Shazlys debutalbum Ahwar. Några spår senare kommer en cover på Sayyid Darwish, den artist som anses ha skapat den egyptiska populärmusiken i början av 1900-talet. Det är en cover som förhåller sig till originalet ungefär som en text till pappret den är skriven på. Nadah El Shazly, som fick sin skolning på Kairos undergroundscen som punksångerska och jazzvokalist, bygger sin version med tumpiano, harpa och kontrabas, och när stycket närmast faller i bitar hålls det ändå ihop av sången.
Så fungerar hennes musik. Även när den har en tydlig anknytningspunkt – som det gamla Kairo i inledningsspåret eller bebop i Koala – är den i grunden tidlös och rotlös. Den är hamnmusik, lika hemma var som helst runt östra Medelhavet, när som helst de senaste hundra åren. Så kunde Barzakh, vars titel syftar på den muslimska skärselden, lika gärna höras i en rebetiko-taverna i Pireus som på ett café i Kairo. Och den klubbiga Palmyra förvandlas, till synes utan att förändras alls, till jazz när den spelas live med band. Det enda som är permanent är Nadah El Shazlys kraftfulla, djupa sång.
