Liverpool-originalen China Crisis, som på olika sätt betraktas som legender inom ”synthpop” och ”sophistipop”, har alltid gjort musik som är mycket lättare att älska än att definiera. Ursprungligen uppstod 1981 från deras Kirkby i stort sett i genren "new wave" som låtskrivarduon bestående av sångaren/keyboardisten Gary Daly och gitarristen/sångaren Eddie Lundon. De nämner influenser så varierande som Davie Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Eric Satie och Brian Eno, är det inte förvånande att deras sound snabbt kunde urskiljas bland deras och kombinerade synthpop med reggae, country och andra stilar med sina egna unika melodier och harmonier för att
harmonier för att skapa distinkt sofistikerad men medryckande pop i en helt egen stil.
Med deras filosofi att ”låten är det viktigaste” var China Crisis inte bara uppfinningsrika med den tidens tidens framväxande teknik och den pågående elektroniska musikrevolutionen utan använde sig kreativt en distinkt ljudblandning av mer ortodoxt ursprung - horn, stråkar, träblås, pedal steel - ett ljud som ljud som ytterligare förstärktes genom att arbeta med några av de största producenterna på 20-talet, inklusive Mike Howlett, Langer/Winstanley och kanske framför allt med Steely Dans Walter Becker.
