År 2024 skulle jazzlegendaren Max Roach ha fyllt 100 år. Med denna konsert vill Bohuslän Big Band hylla Roach banbrytande bidrag till jazzens värld – en resa som sträcker sig från den swingen till den bebopen och ända fram till den moderna jazz vi möter idag.
Den amerikanske jazztrumslagaren Max Roach anses vara en pionjär inom den moderna jazzscenen. För Roach var trumsetet inte bara ett instrument att hålla takten i musiken med utan snarare ett mångfacetterat soloinstrument. Han var banbrytande när det kom till att forma trumspelsstilen och utmana de konventionella gränserna inom musiken. Tillsammans med legendariska musiker som Charlie Parker och Dizzy Gillespie var Roach en framstående gestalt inom bebop-rörelsen på 1940-talet. Deras musik förändrade jazzens dynamik från att vara något man dansade till, till att bli en konstform att lyssna på.
1954 bildade Roach tillsammans med Clifford Brown en av de högst ansedda grupperna i jazzens historia – Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet. Tyvärr blev det uppskattade samarbetet allt för kort då Brown tragiskt omkom i en bilolycka.
Max Roach var inte bara en virtuos på trummorna, utan han spelade också en avgörande roll i Black movement-rörelsen på 1960-talet. Han var en av de första att använda jazzmusiken som ett medel för att belysa och adressera raspolitiska frågor, vilket tydligt framgår i hans verk som det banbrytande albumet ”We Insist! Freedom Now Suite.”
I över 50 år fortsatte Roachs konstnärskap att utvecklas och forma musikaliska landskap, och denna konsert är ett erkännande av hans evigt föränderliga och inflytelserika bidrag till jazzhistorien.
OM BOHUSLÄN BIG BAND
Bohuslän Big Band är inte bara en jazzorkester i världsklass, de är också kända för sina nyskapande samarbeten. De har uppträtt tillsammans med jazzlegendarer som Gregory Porter, Danilo Peréz, Maria Schneider och Nils Landgren och folkkära artister som Jill Johnson och Samuel Ljungblahd. Med sina 16 musiker har Bohuslän Big Band en fantastisk orkesterklang och erbjuder en oförglömlig musikalisk upplevelse. Sedan 2004 är Bohuslän Big Band en del av Vara Konserthus och ett konstnärligt uppdrag från Västra Götalandsregionen.
