DU YUN [US] & GAZE [SE] - World Premiere!
In this World Premiere famous composer Du Yun has created a new piece for Göteborg Art Sounds based on recordings, played in collaboration with five great Swedish musicians in the project GAZE. Du Yun works at the intersection of opera, cabaret, electronics, noise and more. Her opera, Angel’s Bone won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize and in 2018 she was named a Guggenheim Fellow. Du Yun is currently Professor of Composition at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, and distinguished visiting professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. As a curator, she was the Artistic Director of MATA Festival 2014-2018, conceived the Pan Asia Sounding Festival and founded a FutureTradition Initiative in China where she works with folk musicians from around the world.
Nina de Heney is one of the most influential musicians on the improvisation scene in Sweden. A position she cemented for a wider audience when she received the Jazz Musician of the Year Award during the Swedish Jazz celebration. Her solo records have been unanimously praised in the press. She is originally from Switzerland and has studied in the US for Miroslav Vitous at The New England Conservatory of Music.
My Hellgren works as a cellist in many different contexts. She is most active in contemporary art music and is a member of Curious chamber players, GAHLMM and Duo Diabas. My likes to collaborate with composers, but is also interested in what can happen outside the world of sheet music and has explored this in various ways.
Lisen Rylander Löve is a Gothenburg-based saxophonist Lisen Rylander Löve internationally active in jazz, improvisation and experimental music. She is active in several constellations, including Here's To Us, Kärnfamiljen and The Splendor. For the past five years, she has also been running the solo project OCEANS where, in addition to sax, she uses voice and live electronics.
Jonas Larsson helped start the new music group Gageego! almost 30 years ago. He has since played percussion instruments in the group's various projects and concerts, both in Sweden and abroad. In addition to contemporary chamber music and solo music, he works as a freelance musician with opera and symphony orchestras.
Martin Öhman combines acoustic drumming with electronic elements in a synergy that makes him a sought-after musician in jazz and experimental music. He plays everyday with, among others, Klabbes Bank, Thomas Backman and Lisen Rylander Löve OCEANS.
Arrangör
Göteborg Art Sounds, or the GAS-Festival, was founded in 1999. Today it is Sweden’s largest festival for sound art, modern composition, improvisation and electronica.
During the festivals, live performances are intertwined with sound installations, pre-recorded sounds and compositions are mixed with live improvisations and sheet music. During the previous editions of the festival, we have hosted artists such as Laurie Anderson, Kim Gordon, Tan Dun, Pharoah Sanders, the Arditti Quartet, London Sinfonietta, Keith Rowe, Phill Niblock, William Basinski, Machinefabriek, Supersilent, Philip Jeck, Sidsel Endresen, Kangding Ray, Maja Ratkje, Denseland and zeitkratzer to name just a few.
In addition to the musical elements we regularly host public talks, and workshops and seminars are also integral parts of the festival. Göteborg Art Sounds has an international profile and the main focus is to present exciting and relevant contemporary artists. We have ongoing collaborations with other festivals, culture- and educational organizations and promotional networks, both national and international. 2009 - 2023 the artistic director for the festival was Swedish composer and sound artist Staffan Mossenmark. From 2024 the new artistic directors are Stefan Klaverdal (SE) and Clara de Asís.
