Come in, sit down and listen carefully, because these seven short films have a sonic thread tying them together. To describe just three of them, we recommend that you don't miss Niki Lindroth von Bahr’s animated festival hit “The Burden” – the dancing rodents alone are worth the ticket price! Meanwhile, Jesper Dalgaard’s “Übermensch” documents the heart-warming story of two young men as they prepare to perform their first goth rock gig, and the filmmakers who brought you “Ten Metre Tower” take us behind the scenes of a TV news studio.
Programmer’s note: True craftsmanship, a bagful of laughs and loads of foot-tapping. Cinema for the ear.
Arr. for a Scene Jonna Kina
Two foley artists produce sound effects for one of the most famous film scenes in film history: the shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, 1960. Their work is documented on 35 mm film. The viewer sees only the foley artists creating the effects, such as footsteps and door closing. The film examines the way sounds are created for movies and what happens when a film is deconstructed.
Because the World Never Stops Axel Danielson & Maximilien Van Aertryck
When we tune into a TV newscast, we expect a reassuring authority figure, but is what we see anything other than a performance? Behind the scenes during a live broadcast, we get a revealing insight into the hidden side of the evening news.
The World Mika Taanila
The Man Who Fell to Earth directed by Nicolas Roeg in 1976 literally evacuated and flipped. Animals, furniture and empty vehicles await disaster in abandoned landscapes. ”We must have died alone, a long, long time ago.” (David Bowie).
The Burden Niki Lindroth von Bahr
A dark musical enacted in a modern market place next to a large freeway. The employees of the various commercial venues, portrayed as animals, deal with boredom and existential anxiety by cheerfully singing and dancing. To them, the apocalypse is temptingly liberating.
ÜBERMENSCH Jesper Dalgaard
Two young drifters break into an empty church by the sea. They form a blood pact to exorcise their childhood demons and escape a cycle of anxiety. Their dream of making it as goth rock stars forces them to override old insecurities and perform on stage for the first time. The two young men learn about death and suffering, and ultimately realise that the redemption they've longed for is to be found in their friendship.
Natural Disasters Antti Polojärvi
Hateful comments lead a small group of people to quit their YouTube channels. Meanwhile, waves beat endlessly on the rocks of the Baltic Sea shore. A short experimental documentary about human problems being incorporated into nature, to suggest that every human problem is to some extent a kind of ecological disaster.
Sore Eyes for Infinity Elli Vuorinen
An optician's day is filled with a succession of extraordinary customers. One after the other, they use the optical equipment in suspicious ways.
