FUNNY GAMES
The lighter side of life is explored in this humorous programme, but be warned, there are some darker undertones lurking in one or two of these shorts also. The Sporadic Film Collective’s mantra of ‘one idea, one meeting, one day of shooting’ works wonders once again as their brilliantly funny short about how not to propose to someone testifies; We Retired People is a masterclass in comic writing and timing, and the innovative, award-winning As We’re Told takes the seemingly mundane topic of bureaucracy within a job centre and turns it on its head - it’s a joy to behold.
The Proposal by Det sporadiske filmkollektivet
On a boat in an idyllic setting, Joachim goes down on one knee to propose to Toril, the love of his life. Toril has other thoughts about their relationship.
The Door by Jenni Toivoniemi
Strange sounds in the apartment building hallway wake Jussi, a new father, in the middle of the night. Fear and the need to protect his family force him to investigate. He finds a homeless alcoholic, Pentti, who has just broken the window of the hallway door.
We Retired People by Tia Kouvo
It’s an ordinary Tuesday morning in February in Sweden. It’s cold. An elderly couple, Elma and Sven, pass the time reading advertising flyers and waiting for the pharmacy to open. A stationary road movie about old age.
As We're Told by Erik Holmström & Fredrik Wenzel
"It's simple. We do as we're told." This unsettling reply comes from a Swedish employment office employee when asked how the country’s most unpopular government agency works. In this semi-documentary, case workers, receptionists and psychologists - all represented by cardboard puppets - reveal their problems with inadequate software and mystifying error messages, excessive case loads and demoralising results. A comical study of strategies for survival in an irrational bureaucracy.
Sanctuary by Magnus Rutberg
Cogito ergo sum. Well, that's easy for you to say, Descartes. Try to stop the constant radio that's going on inside your head instead.
The Tiger by Mikko Myllylahti
It is a winter evening. Dad returns home drunk. Tiger is in his room and Mom is sleeping on the couch. A quarrel breaks out. Dad has a shotgun. Tiger and Mom escape the house. Silence falls. Tiger needs to go back inside to see what has happened - and to take the first steps towards independence.
Affect by Arvin Kananian
At a remote summer house, a couple is preparing lunch. Outside, birds chirp in the dense forest. The man wanders out into the forest to pee. And to masturbate. On the kitchen counter, his phone signals an incoming text message. On impulse, his girlfriend picks up the phone. She knows he has an allergy to peanuts, but not the severity of his reaction. A drama with a hint of dark comedy. With original music.
