We Will Not Fade Away skildrar de fem tonåringarna Andriy, Illia, Lera, Liza och Ruslan, som växt upp bland ruiner, minfält och kolgruvor i det krigsdrabbade Donbas. Sedan 2014 har de levt i en värld där beskjutningar och skottlossning är vardagsmat, samtidigt som längtan efter ett bättre liv aldrig släpper taget. Under 2019, med hotet om en ny rysk invasion i luften, försöker de tänka på framtiden – och trots de mörka omständigheterna fylls deras sista ungdomsår med energi, drömmar och trots. De målar, fotograferar och fantiserar om stora framtidsdrömmar, om att bli skådespelare eller nästa Elon Musk. 

När de får chansen att följa med på en expedition till Himalaya, öppnas en tillfällig dörr till frihet och en värld bortom krigets begränsningar. Resan blir en möjlighet att förverkliga en dröm, och för ett kort ögonblick få uppleva den skönhet och frihet de längtar efter. Men hoppet får ett brutalt slut när Rysslands fullskaliga invasion av Ukraina inleds i februari 2022 och hotar att förgöra deras sista drömmar om framtiden. 

Med ett varsamt och inkännande filmspråk målar We Will Not Fade Away upp ett rörande porträtt av en ung generation omgiven av mörker, men som – kanske just därför – lär sig att se och värdesätta livets sköra skönhet. Filmen hade premiär på Berlinale 2023 och visades även vid Genève internationella filmfestival och Forum för mänskliga rättigheter samma år.

We Will Not Fade Away hade premiär på Berlinale 2023 där den var med i tävlan för bästa ungdomsfilm. Filmen vann Silver Eye Award vid East Doc Platform 2023 för bästa dokumentärfilm och ECFA Award för bästa dokumentär för ung publik 2024. Den har sedan dess visats på många internationella festivaler.

We Will Not Fade Away tells the story of five teenagers, Andriy, Illia, Lera, Liza and Ruslan, who grew up among ruins, minefields and coal mines in the war-torn Donbas. Since 2014, they have lived in a world where shelling and gunfire are commonplace, while the longing for a better life never faded. In 2019, with the threat of a new Russian invasion looming, they try to think about the future - and despite the dark circumstances, their last years of adolescence are filled with energy, dreams and defiance. They paint, photograph and fantasise about big dreams for the future, about becoming actors or the next Elon Musk.

When they get the chance to join an expedition to the Himalayas, a temporary door opens to freedom and a world beyond the reality of war. The journey becomes an opportunity to realise a dream, and for a brief moment to experience the beauty and freedom they long for. But their hope comes to a brutal end when Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine begins in February 2022, threatening to destroy their last dreams of the future.

With gentle and compassionate cinematography, We Will Not Fade Away paints a moving portrait of a young generation surrounded by darkness, but who - perhaps for that very reason - learn to see and appreciate the fragile beauty of life. The film premiered at the Berlinale in 2023 and was also screened at the Geneva International Film Festival and the Human Rights Forum in the same year.

We Will Not Fade Away premiered at Berlinale Generation 2023 and competed in the section for youth-focused films. It went on to win the Silver Eye Award at the East Doc Platform 2023 for Best Feature Documentary and the ECFA Award for Best Young Audience Documentary in 2024. The film has since then been screened at numerous international festivals.
