"Welcome to Chechnya" - charity film screening and discussion with human rights activists
The Anti-War Committee in Sweden together with the North Caucasus SOS Crisis group invites everyone to a screening and discussion of the documentary film "Welcome to Chechnya" by American director David France. The main character of the film Maxim Lapunov is the first person who openly stated that he was a victim of torture in Chechnya because of his homosexuality. The documentary was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize for Best Editing. Among other things, it won the Audience Award at the Berlin Film Festival. The advanced facial replacement techniques using artificial intelligence and novel visual effects technology used in the process became a game changer and a brand new tool for documentary filmmakers.
The screening will be one of several events in conjunction with Stockholm Pride Week. Traditionally, this week focuses on the problems of sexual minorities in different countries of the world. Repression against LGBTQ+ people is part of the general concept of Putin's regime, where respect for the rights and dignity of the individual is reduced to zero. And after the non-existent organization "International LGBT Movement" was declared extremist in Russia, a huge number of people were put at risk and need help urgently. North Caucasus SOS supports and evacuates people who have been tortured or are in danger because of their sexual orientation. Their work is extremely important and needs support from civil society both in Russia and Sweden.
The movie screening will be followed by a discussion with North Caucasus SOS human rights activists David Isteev and Lucy Shtein.
All profits from this event and additional donations will be forwarded to North Caucasus SOS.
